Increasing research suggests that yoga techniques may be effective tools in coping with the effects of many mental health issues. In this course, we will discuss biological and environmental roots of mental health issues such as depression, anxiety, posttraumatic stress disorder, and substance abuse and learn how yoga techniques (breath work, movement, meditation, and other mindfulness practiced) may be used to manage their physical and emotional effects.
We will practice techniques that may be integrated into mental health, as well as sequenced into longer sessions specific to certain issues, to complement traditional care.
Course participants will:
- define and discuss causes and effects of depression, anxiety, posttraumatic stress disorder, and substance abuse.
- recognize the physical, mental, and emotional effects of specific breathing, posture, movement, and meditation techniques.
- choose and facilitate specific yoga techniques to benefit various mental health issues.
- plan ways to incorporate yoga techniques into mental health practice, private and group yoga sessions, and for self-care to balance strong emotional experiences.
